“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Psalm 119:105
Familiar, easy to remember, a whisper we breathe to heaven when our path becomes unclear and foggy. The real, the hard truth is that we may think we see our path, our journey clearly and are moving in the direction in which we believe is God-driven, and suddenly life rains down what seems to us an unexpected storm which precipitates a screeching halt or a long and winding detour. This verse like many which we run to when we are in a “situation,” is not meant to be a go-to-when-you-need-it but rather a live-by-everyday premise.
Your word means that which is the God-breathed scriptures from Genesis to Revelation, the totality of God speaking to man. These same scriptures tell us that we should not boast about tomorrow for you do not know what a day may bring forth. If you’ve lived more than a minute, you can testify to the reality of this statement. Jesus said the same thing as recorded by Matthew, “ Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
Look at the context of the words Jesus said. His point was to focus on seeking the kingdom of God and His righteousness, it was never intended to cause worry or anxiety because we have no control and no actual insight into what will happen on earth, but we know exactly WHO is in control and our focus should be on the One who holds us together, the mighty God who is already in what is our future and has given us our marching orders – “Go and make disciples.” Be kingdom builders, be the one who points others to the life saver, be the one who is delighted in God himself.
The lamp of God’s word is “to my feet;” this means walking; this means moving; this means taking steps on the path on which God has provided His light, even if it’s one step. ONE – just one step forward in the kingdom of heaven, shakes the gates of hell more than 10,000 self-initiated steps, even if those steps are well intentioned. Understand that it not by your power, but by God’s might that anything of eternal value happens.
“I am the Light of the world” Jesus said. Worship and walk in a manner worthy of your calling.
One step at a time.
